Bird in the Reeds by maggiemae

Bird in the Reeds

Three good things happened on my walk home this afternoon ( to adopt a friend's @happypat, nice habit):
1/ I saw this Pukeko (porphyrio) in the undergrowth by a bridge and this time my camera could shoot it clearly - good light!
2/- I found a $5 note on the side of the road!
3/- I said, Hello to a woman in her very tidy garden and got a smile!

The pukeko is also called the purple swamp hen and I heard its high querulous notes as I passed.

No, don't think so, @chard Richard. There are 15 sub species found elsewhere in the world but not the States.

Nice shot! Of all three events of you I would take the first as a very lucky one for me... The third is also good... The second... hmm... I would buy food for this pretty bird... It depends, of course.

I love pukekos - they're quite comical. I think they used them in some TV adverts in NZ a few years ago.
May 4th, 2013
The advert is now on youtube of course http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghGPbuqj2As
