This is a reasonably decent photo of one of our Yellow Eyed Penguins that come ashore in the late afternoon about 2 hours before sunset. It was actually almost sunset so we were lucky to see three on the beach then this one was just below the viewing platform.
Three good things:
1. One day to go - no more to be said
2. Seeing our Little Blue Penguins come ashore just after sunset.
3. The realisation that I have more to learn with photographing the moon - full tonight and a beautiful gold but in spite of steady hand, the moon had a comma attached!
I think I am having a visit for about two months next year!!! Oh for the quiet life!
He is a cute little fellow.....I think he is peeping at you. How far is your house away from the beach maggiemae?
@happypat Its about 5mins drive away, Pat. These penguin places here are almost the only ones within 5 mins from central Oamaru in the World! Don't quote me on that though!
@amandal Yes, its very different from the zoo, Amanda. There is no fee for the Yellow Eyed viewing but for the Little Blues the fee is $28/adult which is very expensive I think but there is only a small fee if you are a local!
I am in awe that you have penguins naturally near your home. This is a terrific shot too. You caught him well, Maggiemae.
For the moon you probably moved the camera as you pushed the button. I have no idea what your setting were but try a mid range ISO, a fast shutter speed and that might help with the motion you are catching
Thanks for sharing this peek at a penguin. The closest I've come to seeing one in the wild was after we sat for about four hours on a beach in Tasmania in a freezing cold breeze. When we could only just figure out their shapes against the fading light they popped up onto the rocks. Far too late for photographs.
Nice shot, Maggiemae. I've never seen anything like this before. Glad you spotted it!
As for getting the moon, it depends on your camera. When I had a Kodak Easy Share, I set ISO as low as it could go, set focus to infinity and zoomed in as far as I could (including digital zoom) and I turned on the flash. Never failed. Now I have a camera that has settings to shoot the moon. Unfortunately for us tonight we don't get to see it thanks to the rain we are having. Keep trying to shoot the moon Try using a tripod too. Steady hands might work but sometimes you can have a very slight movement and not know it.
@grammyn@prttblues Thank you Katy and Bev re the moon shots! I know about the camera movement but appreciated the settings choices. How do you set the camera on infinity?
