This is called the Memorial Bridge, and comprises of four 336 ft. riveted Pennsylvania through truss spans and was completed in September 1925, built and fabricated by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Works of Leavenworth, Kansas.
It is in Chamberlain and I saw an old picture of it in one of the hotels. I tried to get the same angle as in the picture but there are more trees her today than was in the original picture.
Three good things:
1. I did have a walk in spite of there being no footpaths in this town!
2. Got a picture of the super moon - its just a moon picture but the best I've done with my new camera.
3. Twiddling my fingers at a cute baby at the next table at teatime. He kept turning his head and smiling at me.
That is one fantastic photo. Greatlooking dougle bridge. A number of them are coming down and being replaced, so catching this one while it is still in use is wonderful!! FAV
Instant fav ... Fabulous! I love everything about this shot especially how the trees frame that wonderful picturesque setting. Thanks for the history lesson, too.
I seem to have read somewhere that walking isn't much of a pastime in the USA......correct me if I am wrong folks! I suppose the country is so big you would never get anywhere!
Wonderful span of bridge here maggiemae....the iron work alone is massive....the great Missouri....who would have thought you would see that.....you do get about! I think you have good zoom on your new camera...must look for your photo.
Wonderful image MaggieMae. Fav. Fascinated by the discussion on walking. When I visited my cousin in Ohio her grandkids caught the school bus although they could have walked it. They didn't because it was dangerous to walk without pavements! We reminisced about our walk to school when we were their age. She did just over two miles each way and we did three miles each way! I think we were a fitter generation!
I haven't been on the site for a while and just checked through your photos of your trip! You've taken some fantastic shots! Love the bridges, the bikes, the bikers and the kids. While in Rapid City, you were only about 4 hours away from the town in Montana where my husband works. Too bad I wasn't out there. I would have driven down and said hello! Enjoy the rest of your vacation!
@smellychelli Nobody seems to think anything of driving for hours and hours here! We would not plan a trip more than 3 hours and definitely not there and back in one day! But thanks for the thought!
Great view! As for walking- it depends on where you live and whether or not you like to do it. Both of my daughter-in-laws are avid walkers and take the kids on them regularly. I like to walk too and have a walking partner that goes with me- it's more fun that way and her dog gets a work-out too. But on the whole I do think Americans have become somewhat lazy about that. Some places aren't conducive to walking but there is also an inordinate amount of emphasis on video games, movies, tv and other sedentary pastimes. There are many pundits who claim we are the most obese we've ever been including our children. I say all this as I'm SITTING in front of the computer screen typing!
@olivetreeann I do agree about the sitting but that is world wide! Some countries have walking trails all over the place, others have walking trails you have to drive to and others nothing at all. Very few people walk to the shops now!
@maggiemae We have a wonderful trail nearby that I've taken quite a few pictures on. I'm trying to be out and about more so that has been a great place to go.
Very nice, Maggiemae. Love the detaii in the bridge. You are covering a lot of territory! We simply do not have a good footpath system here. It's almost as if people prefer not to walk.
Oh, forgot to say that's why I love Columbia -- footpaths everywhere -- 83 miles of them for walkers and bicyclists. The DC/Balt area has networks of paths and rail trails winding through parks -- it's a great place to live if you love to walk as I do.

You can see the soft color in the clouds, and structure details on the bridge.
I see that you said it is in Chamberlain. Which state? I would love to see it someday. fav
