Sitting outside an old River Inn in the sun and watching the big river sweep past, we thought the perfect scene was just as it unfolded in front of us. The St Croix River in St Paul. The bridge section rose to let this boat through - couple of toots and away they went!
Three good things:
1. John had a bottle of beer called "Lift Bridge' which is what this bridge does to let boats through.
2.They serve big wines here in the US of A!
3. Motorbike rally, 40miles into the country - we arrived first in the car!
A vast river and a beautiful Showboat -- all we need now is Paul Robeson singing "Ol' man river" !! How lovely Maggiemae ,to sit there and watch the world go by !!
What a great shot, it's so exciting to see these grand bridges lifting.
BTW we went to Clarks Mill when we came through Oamaru in January. It was pouring with rain and we were just passing through. We went to the Totara Estate first and they suggested the mill. We just happened to turn up during the two hour slot once a month that the mill was working! We had a fascinting tour and even better - it was free as we are members of the National Trust here in the UK and they have a reciprocal arrangement. It was very similar to the mill we went to here on Tuesday.
@busylady That is just down the road from us - about 10 minutes! We should have known! Fascinating place - a friend of ours is on the Trust for this and does a lot of work.
My mom loved the song Ol' Man River from Showboat and every time I see a river boat I can picture the scene at the finale and her crying away! Nice shot!
Lovely shot, Maggie. So glad that you are getting to see so much on your trip. I've been on a paddle wheel boat when I went to Nashville 9 years ago. They are fun.
I think this is so interesting. Chicago's bridges literally raise on each side so they are open in the middle. This one is cool to see the way this whole segment raises and lowers. And the photograph has wonderful lines and architectural elements.
Great capture Maggie. I love the lines and the POV. I don't think I've ever seen a bridge that lifted. Only the kind that open up (draw bridges, I think they're called).
What a great shot, Maggiemae. We have a bridge that lifts as well to let boats through, though have never seen it do so. Lucky you to be there just as this happened to take a photo. Sounds like you are having such a wonderful time. FAV
