The Indian motorcycle group were riding down to Mystic Lake Casino, St Paul. We went by car and got there some time before and tried to find them in this enormous building. Asking someone, we then jumped in a shuttle, got driven some distance away to this Indian Celebration. Lucky enough to catch some shots before we realised the motorbike crew were not part of this:
Dancers of all ages gathered at the annual Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Wacipi (Pow Wow) on Friday, August 15, and through to Sunday, August 17, at the Wacipi Grounds on the SMSC reservation. It is a social gathering where friends and relatives celebrate their culture and way of life, and the Wacipi is open to the public. The word “Wacipi” (pronounced “wah-chee-pee”) in the Dakota language translates as “they dance.”
Three good things:
1. We eventually found the group enjoying a meal at the Steak house in the Casino.
2. I think John feels driving for hours in the dark through City motorways, a challenge. I am nervously exhausted!
3. Turned the GPS off in my camera - uses too much battery but I have a spare battery.
that's some experience, it's like eating at a party where you don't recognize anybody and turns out the party you're supposed to be at is in another venue and no such lavish meal was being served. oh, well, you got great photos and hopefully you met some new people and witnessed a great tradition.
Well I think you found another great group of Indians....how wonderfully colourful this group are.......only in the USA !
I think you are both doing marvellously with all the traveling & finding your way around! A holiday not to forget!
@happypat Some parts I would like to forget - like at the moment, John's gone on a 2 and 1/2 hr ride (in a sidecar) and I'm stuck here at the Shop. I will not get on a bike and I will not drive the car myself so i'm my own worst enemy!
Although the mix-up was unintentional it was really to your benefit! This would certainly be an awesome experience and is sort of the forgotten part of our history. You really did get to see something special! Well, I hope by the time you read this John is safe and sound back at the hotel. And thank you for your kind words about me to Mrs. Smith. That was sweet- I just knew you'd enjoy her barn shots.
Great shot, Maggie. Fav. I'm quarter Cherokee (my mum was 1/2). I embrace my native heritage. I love this shot. So colorful and full of emotion. There are some native cultures that don't allow photos to be taken without permission from the chief when they are having a pow wow. You lucked out with this one! So glad you got sidetracked. Fav Sorry for late comment. I have been ill.
