Harissa by maggiemae

Harissa

A very small store in the Historic part of town called the Larder, sells food made way out of town in the Riverstone Kitchen - famous restaurant with a castle on site. The menu changes daily and you message for a meal. Today was roast chicken on Foccacia with Harris and fresh salad. I googled Harissa: Harissa is a North African hot chili pepper paste, the main ingredients of which are roasted red peppers, Baklouti peppers or serrano peppers, spices and herbs such as garlic paste, caraway seeds, coriander seeds, cumin and olive oil to carry the oil-soluble flavors. No wonder it was utterly delicious! This cost $15NZ and was enough for both of us.
Thankful for:
Planted a cherry tomato plant today and so far I have checked on it several times. It hasn't grown but it hasn't died!
Nice! I usually have a jar of harissa in the fridge. I don't use it often, but every now and then it comes up in a recipe.

Yum - @julzmaioro and I were holidaying in the South Island a few years ago. We had decided to have lunch at Riverstone, as I had been there and had talked it up. We arrived only to find that it was closed...

@dide Oh no....it wasn't lockdown then! It is open every day now! But I can get one menu item from within Oamaru - 5 mins away! Feel so lucky!

It looks delicious, you did well to share it. I think if I had been there and shared it with David his share would be much smaller than mine

I just bought a jar of harissa for a recipe I plan to try soon. (You know how everyone is trying new recipes during the pandemic!) I had to ask the store employee to locate it for me and it took him awhile too.

@onewing I always give John the larger share, Babs - if I wait long enough, I feel full with that smaller portion.

@allie912 I didn't know you could buy this. Must look for it in the markets!

@happypat Its not too spicy and I guess if you made it from scratch as this chef would, you could tone the spicy bit down!

@ludwigsdiana I've never heard of harissa before but it seems most people know it.

I have never heard of it before but it sounds delicious. Your photo of the sandwich is very inviting and nicely composed!

Good luck with those tomatoes!
