Old Man's Beard by maggiemae

Old Man's Beard

also known as Clematis vitalba...! But it is a deadly plant..."While we’ve got nothing against older men with beards, the plant Old Man's Beard is considered the most damaging climbing plant introduced to New Zealand because it smothers the plants and trees it grows on"
This is in a somewhat abandoned property just round the corner from us. I think it must be a rented property as nothing is done to contain weeds and some lovely plants are being overcome.
I'm pretending to 'run' to confuse my smart watch. I just walk fast with little steps. I am actually more clever than my smart watch!
It makes for an interesting photo though!

Lovely detail here - I don’t know this particular Clematis, I don’t think they are not all so rampant

The bee seems to like it.
(And beware of the smart watch. It will fight back!)

Yes quite evasive , but does look quite pretty especially at this stage of fluffy seeds!

smothers and covers, yet looks delicate

It tickles me that you are outsmarting your watch!

I feel you have posted something similar before. This is the first I have heard about a clematis being damaging

It’s a busy, interesting picture. Unfortunate plant though.

I never knew of Old Man’s Beard being so dangerous & bad. It’s climbing yes but it doesn’t seem to be that big a problem here as far as I know. You are definitely cleverer than your watch! Beaten it at its own game!

The bee seems to be enjoying it.

@rensala There are so many varieties of clematis but this one is the only bad one!

@grammyn Yes I photographed the seed head a while ago, Katy but its always good to get another view. It smothers other plants!
