Cyclists on the KSU campus

My second offering to Traci @l2lumom for the get pushed challenge she gave me of doing street photography. So far I haven't gone any further afield than the KSU campus where I work. This time I went ahead and used the iPod to see if it made me any more brave about aiming at people and snapping. I learned several things:

1.) Yes, I do feel less nervous and conspicuous with an iPod in hand than with the camera.
2.) While the quality of image (technically-speaking) is not as high, the lessened ability to "cheat," take a photo from afar, and just crop/enlarge the subject is good for me.
3.) I never knew you could take the photo by pressing the volume control buttons on the side. Cool! I don't have to search for the button on the screen - or absent-mindedly press the "home" button instead and close the application, thus totally losing the shot.
4.) Duh! If I turn the volume all the way down on the iPod, I can avoid that tell-tale fake "click" it makes as I take the picture. Much better -- less conspicuous if the subject is near.

I've cropped at the bottom and, after playing around with the color decided to completely desaturate it.
@l2lumom Traci, here is #2 for your challenge.

Neat shot! Mary, where do you work at KSU? I got my Masters Degree at KSU in 2006 in Theatre With a Concentration in Drama Therapy.

Good job. Nice shadows.

@kareenking You know, I should have known. Your profile says you do Drama Therapy and where better in this region... I work 1/2 time in the office of the Modern Languages Department in Eisenhower Hall. Started there last summer. Before that, for 10 and 1/2 years I worked full time in the office of the English Department. Long, long, ago I got my undergraduate degree in Theatre from K-State -- so that department is dear to me. If you finished your Masters in 2006 you probably just missed seeing either of the two "Family Ties" project plays -- "If Truth be Told" written and directed by Martha Crouse in October '06, and "You Belong to Us" done by Jemmie Godwin in March '07. Both grad students in Drama Therapy. They wrote their scripts from interviews they did -- Martha with young gay men, and Jemmie with parents of gay and lesbians. Our PFLAG chapter sponsored the productions and Frank and I played the parents of a lesbian daughter in Jemmie's play. Long-winded answer to your simple question "Where do you work at KSU?"

@omabluebird Thank you, Susan.

A really nicely-framed shot that definitely 'catches the moment'. I agree with the choice of b&w. Possibly you could try and bring the guy on the left out of the shadow a little more? Difficult I know because of the bright overhead light in the middle of the day.

I've also got the sound turned off on my S3 - will have to experiment with taking pictures with the volume control as I'm constantly hitting the home button by mistake!

@philr Thanks. When I get my Mac back from the shot and re-install PS Elements I'll see if I can isolate that area and lighten it more? Learning curve, here.

Nice shot, and you seem to be getting a lot from your challenge, I always feel less conspicuous with my phone camera. @mcsiegle

The only drawback that I can see to this shot is the faces are completely in shadow. That is something you can probably correct in post-processing. If you have internet access without your Mac, Ribbet is a free-online processing site that has dodging capabilities that will do that for you.

@denidouble Thanks, Deni. Though yesterday I took pictures with it on my way back to the parking lot, but found myself surreptitiously taking photos of people indiscriminately, and not really looking -- just aiming. For the most part all I got was junk. So I need a middle ground. I did ask the woman in the Menards store who helped me if I could take her picture -- took a very quick, very pedestrian picture. Don't know if inside a store counts as "street" photography, but she was a stranger to me.

@abhijit Thanks, and you're welcome. I did really love the leaf skeleton and I see by the 10 Favs it got I'm not alone.

@mcsiegle Mary as an ace member you can also upload your photo here and then choose "edit with Picmonkey" from the menu on the right. I think ace members get all the premium features there too- I just haven't processed a shot there in a while. Once you've edited the shot, you then save it back to 365. So you've got that option too.
