We've been looking up plants all day and still can't find anything like it! Size? Leaf shape? Is this a flower or a seed pod? Were there others on the plant? I'm SO fascinated by this - I really want to find out what it is!!!!
@mothermalarky Carol, I thought I had posted a reply. I think I was trying to do it on my iPod and may have lost either wifi connection or power as I was posting what I wrote. Big apologies for the delay in answering you. I'm no good at estimating - size, leaf shape. There was only one of these. I really ought to send the picture to my friends who own the last and ask them about it. I'm leaning toward thinking it's an abnormal growth -- some sort of gall? -- on a plant that usually doesn't look like that. It was pretty big, but again I'm not good at estimating. I took two other shots of it, but they didn't give much better look at the whole plant. If I get around to asking Kim or Jack if they know what it is, I'll let you know what (if anything) I find out.
