Could not tell whether this is a Cooper's Hawk or Sharp Shinned Hawk - never could get enough detail - and didn't see him fly off to catch the wing shape. Just happy to find one.
I am going with Melissa, I am in to birds, but not USA ones, however @nanalisarocks had one in her garden recently,, and after trying to identify that, I think this is a Sharp Shinned.
Welcome the views of anyone more familiar with these.
I always see the hawks as they are flying away!!! Once I got some photos of one in our back yard, eyeing our dogs when they were real little!! I put the puppies in the house, took some photos and then it got mad and left. Guess I took it's meal away!!! They are such magnificent birds though, aren't they? Great and lucky capture!!! FAV!
Suspect you have a Red-shouldered Hawk here. Looks too thick for a Cooper's or Sharp-shinned, and the black and white checked wing feathers make me think Red-shouldered. Also the tail pattern.
