Migration Time by milaniet

Migration Time

Had never seen any of these ducks on the Arkansas River before. Must be passing through on their way probably north? Believe they are the ring neck duck (though the ring is around the bill) and the larger group may be Greater Scaup.
They are so pretty. I saw a black and white duck today, but he was not close enough to get a shot. You did well.

I started watching last week for migrating birds but other than some Canada geese, we haven't spotted anything interesting yet. Great collection of images you have here. It's great to see new birds to the area, isn't it!

Beautiful shots...I see the Lesser Scaups lots, not the Greater too often. The Lesser have been coming thru already and the Swans and Snow Geese. Saw my first Coot of the season on Saturday.

@lynnb I went back and forth in the identification book between the Lesser and Greater Scaup - but "think" this is the lesser. Now coots, we still have PLENTY of! Speedy little guys!

Great selection of shots, it is a time of year for visitors to call in, right now.

I would probably agree with Greater Scaup, based on the roundness of the heads. Definitely must be migrating north to breed. Glad you were able to see them.

Lovely collage. I have never see Lesser Scaup, but I have been watching a female Great Scaup and I think these birds look to me like Lesser Scaup? And going through my field guide, except for the ring necked of course.
