If you ever wondered how it looks like, where the original and rather famous Emmental cheese comes from,... here you see a little slide of the Emmental (Valley of the river Emme). A valley lying between Bern and Lucerne. It is a hilly landscape and the region is mostly devoted to farming, particularly dairy farming. The original Emmental cheese is produced here, and the dairy industry still dominates the local economy.
But of course, cow’s milk is used for the cheese. These sheep just wanted to be in the picture and posed nicely for me. ;-)
Tourism has had less impact on the region than on other parts of Switzerland. In Mai, when the bigger mountains are still covered in snow, but you crave to hike in elevated grounds, this is a good choice here around 1400 m.
But as I said before it is hilly and there is a lot of up and down, and hiking can be strenuous. At least it was for me today, but beautiful too.
Beautiful countryside! These sheep do look like they are posing for you, too. I went to your gorgeous country in the late 1980s and made it to Gruyeres but not Emmental. I did a little bit of hiking on some snow-capped mountains.
