"My" place just before sunset, reflected in a puddle right at the waterfront.
We had mild temperatures in the last couple of days and today also foehn, a type of stormy, warm, down-slope wind that occurs in the lee of a mountain range. When foehns hit, things warm up quickly; and can make 30 cm deep snow vanish in one day. The snow partly melts and partly evaporates in the wind.
Chinook is a relative of our foehn and is claimed by popular folk-etymology to mean "snow-eater", but it is really the name of the people in the region where the usage was first derived.
But it is quite true, the foehn and the chinook are snow eaters.
