When we arrived in Rotorua we did a bit of a recce to get our bearings. No wonder it's called Rotorua Lakes District - I didn't realise there were so many lakes in the area. Lake Rotokakahi and Lake Tikitapu are adjacent to each other. This one is the bigger of the two. There's a lookout stop where you can climb a twmp (that's Welsh for mound) and look across both the lakes. Apparently in the right conditions the lakes do look blue and green. Lake Rotokakahi is tapu (sacred) and privately owned by a Maori iwi so is not accessible to the public. There used to be a walking/biking trail at this lake but sadly people abused the privilege so it was closed.
