I dug around my "odds and ends" drawer in the kitchen this morning for today's subject. This hand-held mixer was my grandmother's and I used every once in a while when we were first married. But practicality soon took over as I realized it took twice as long to mix things by hand as opposed to my electric mixer!
@pflaume Thank you Lisa! One of my favorite places to shoot stuff is my stainless steel kitchen sink! However it's such a tight spot I often have to do close ups out of necessity. I don't really think everyone wants to see the dishes drying in the dish drainer! @dakotaburns Thank you Donald! @kerristephens Thank you Kerri!
I wonder how those cooks in Downton Abbey mixed all those souffles and batter cakes and meringues, but I guess that was what they had scullery maids for! Great POV in this composition.
Thank you Allison (I haven't watched that show, but your comment about the scullery maids made me smile!), Kathryn, Smitha, Brian (no and you don't see it that often in my house either as it's buried in the odds and ends drawer!), and Maggie (I don't have a big fancy mix master style, just a hand held electric, but it's quicker than this one).
And for those who liked the pov- I love to shoot things like this in my kitchen sink! The stainless steel really loves the morning light, but as it is a very small space it demands close-ups. Otherwise you'd be seeing all the breakfast dishes drying in the dish drainer!
When I saw it Ann and before I read your comment I thought no she wouldn't have one like that to use nowadays. I remember it very well from my childhood. mom used to have one that looked the same as yours. funny how it brings back memories.
@bruni They do, don't they? Although I don't remember my grandmother cooking with this, I do remember the kitchen and how warm it was and how good it smelled when she was cooking something in the oven. Thanks Bruni!
Great shot of an old object! I still have a hand mixer! They never go out of style and can always be useful! I used to have an electric one but it decided to smoke and melt and all I have that remains are the beaters! Love the tone of the black and white. Well done! :)
Nice one. . .I made a coconut cake over the weekend (which I've never done before!) and used an old recipe for seven minute frosting. . .the blog I got that recipe from said to say a special prayer to all those who originally beat seven minute frosting by hand. . .as we use our KitchenAids and MixMasters!
@lyno Thank you Lyn! lol I don't have a Kitchen Aid or Mix Master- I do have a hand-held electric though, which although not as fancy as the former certainly makes it easier to whip up a batter or some good ol' mashed potatoes! @eudora Thank you Diane! @filsie65 Thank you Phil! This would be fun to pull out when the grand daughter visits. @alia_801 Thanks Alia! I should bring it out when Leigh comes- although I wonder if she'd be patient enough with it! @sharritta Thanks Sharon! One of my favorite places to shoot things like this is my stainless steel kitchen sink. In the morning sun it makes the nicest colors as you can see. @cimes1 Thanks Carole- I'd actually have to say the wire whisk might be a bit easier to use than this fellow, but the old things are so much fun to reminisce with. @rachelmackenzie Thanks Rachel- no processing on this one. It truly is sooc. The trick is where I photographed it- in my kitchen sink! The early morning light reflects perfectly in the stainless steel. I shoot pictures in there a lot!
@jackie8 Thanks Jackie! I am totally sentimental with these things! @salza Thank you Sally! I'd keep the parts just for photos on 365! @sangwann Thank you Dione! Yes, they do come in handy when the power goes out! @jesperani Thank you Jennifer! @kandernob Thank you Karen!
@nadaa@todimf
Thank you Nada! I shot this in my sink which really dictates the tight crop- otherwise you'd see the dishes in the dish drainer and other sundry things on my counter top! @todimf Thank you Cecilia!
@automaticslim Thanks Andy- of course I generally like an up-close and personal shot anyway, but as previously mentioned, when shooting in the sink I have to zoom in close or all my household secrets would be revealed and then there'd be nothing to speculate about.
when i baked my first cake, i used a handheld or 'manual' mixer. the cake turned out well and it justified me buying a small electric mixer. hah! never touched the manual one after that! nice set up. that mixer tells a lot of good stories!
@dakotaburns Thank you Donald!
