Overexposed Glass by olivetreeann

Overexposed Glass

Monday, Monday! Just felt so lackluster today and hardly did anything. I couldn't even seem to shoot an overexposed picture I was happy with. I thought I'd like to compare and contrast the same overexposed shot in black & white and color, but nothing I shot seemed to be all that interesting. This was the best of the lot. You all had such nice things to say about the sponge shot- this picture exists to keep me humble!
frankly, i don't know how to go about this exposure thing. do we under/over expose when shooting or can we do it in post?

did the jar photobombed your shot?

Cool shot

I think it turned out nice! I love the pattern in the glass. And I found it hard to do an overexposed shot today too, but this is how we learn! I like the angle of this one too.

I like the patterns through the glass. I don't really have a clue how to tackle the over/underexposures either! I suppose that's what makes it a challenge!

Very interesting!

Well that lights it all up, nice

@summerfield @alia_801 Thank you Vikki and Alia! The way I've overexposed a shot is to pull up the exposure "meter" (menu- I'm not sure what to call it and I'm too lazy to get up and read through the manual) and it gives me a range from -2 to +2. I'm not a technical expert (and I should probably know this) but I believe this is how long the shutter will stay open to "expose the film". In my p & s, it is automatically set to 0. So I move the setting to anything above 1. This one is set at 1 2/3. So I think that means that the shutter stays open for 1 and 2/3 seconds. I think- but I'm not sure! If it's not that, it's how wide the shutter opens. At any rate, that's what I do. You can manipulate it in post processing which is probably easier, but if you want to be true to really shooting something purposely overexposed, that's how you do it. That being said, I am dissatisfied with this shot because none of the ones I shot in b/w yesterday turned out as I'd hoped. I was planning to do the same shot in color and b/w, but the ones that I was able to do both types in were blaaaaah! This was a color shot that I converted to b/w and the ocd melancholy perfectionist in me is disgusted that it is not really a b/w! But it is overexposed! And no Vikki, the jar is not photobombed. I took the shot on a tilt on purpose. Bottom line- as nice as everyone is being, this is not what I'd hoped for today!

@kerristephens Thank you Kerri!
@emrob Thank you Mandy! I just couldn't seem to find a spot where the light was flooding into the room. Yes, live and learn!
@sangwann Thank you Dione!
@digitalrn Thank you Rick! It's not really where I want it, but it was just an off day. They come and go!

Looks good from where I sit. May have that same pattern of crystal luncheon plate inherited from my MIL's belongings. Very pretty collection.

@cimes1 Thanks Carole! Well, it's not one of my best, but it was the best of yesterday's lot! The glassware is called Moonstone and if you want to see a color version of it with a little history about the glass itself I posted a close-up of it on March 23, 2012. It may come up if you type in the marchphotoaday tag- although you'll get every person who did that last year's photo as well.

I'm having issues too. I think taking out color then taking out the details like you do when over or underexposing gives a lot of empty dark or light and bores me, but I'm trying to learn from it.
February 19th, 2013
Lovely detail I like this :-)
February 19th, 2013
I liked it right off the bat without even knowing what you were up to! i love the glassware...i do remember the color and loved it then to! Great over exposeure shot! :)
February 19th, 2013
I love these glass plates and dishes!!! Such a neat shot!!
February 19th, 2013
I think this looks really good. I don't even know how to intentionally overexpose a photo.
February 19th, 2013
Lovely shot. I love the high key and the detail.
February 19th, 2013
I like this overexposured picture. It really makes things so delicate and fragile. Perfect idea for a pictures of a glass plate.

@pandorasecho @vposey @ellimae @ruthmouch @henrir @jesperani @mrssmith

Thank you Dixie, Vickie, Ellen, Ruth, Henri, Jennifer and Carla!

@henrir There are a couple ways you can overexpose a shot. One of course is manipulating the photo in post-processing. Another way is to use your flash when you don't need it. You can also over expose a shot by intentionally shooting into the light source- like the sun. If your digital camera has a way to adjust the exposure compensation, you can overexpose with that too. For this shot, I bumped up the exposure compensation as far as it would go.

cool overexposure! The glass looks fragile with the over exposure.

Bev
Oooh! This one is nice too!!! I like both of them. Please don't make me choose!! I love the texture in this photo. Well done!
February 20th, 2013
@olivetreeann I think that meter is the white balance setting (at least, on my camera that's what the dial from -2 to +2 does). I didn't think of playing with that so I might give it a go later in the week... Thanks for the link to the rose pic too. It didn't really work for me, but I've decided that I'm not really one for overexposed pics at the best of times...
February 20th, 2013
@daisy Thank you Kathryn! I'm not that pleased with this one. I couldn't get the light to do what I had in my mind. But it is overexposed.
@prttblues Thanks Bev! I'm not happy with either. It was just an off day for me- but it's what I took so it's what I posted.
@alia_801 Thanks Alia! I did finally pull out my manual and what I was describing was the exposure compensation. If I'm understanding my manual correctly it's actually there to help you avoid over or under exposing something that's back lit or shot in a dark setting- like at night- without using a flash. My camera has a separate setting for the AWB. And I tagged you on the rose picture just so you could see it. The best "overexposure" photographer on 365 (in my humble opinion!) is Beachradish (I think she's going by stillbeachradish now). Her shots are inspiring- and the best ones that I've done are ones where I've tried to imitate hers.

It makes for a nice abstract Ann. This part of the challenge is harder than I expected. I typically over / under expose after but I'm trying to learn in camera. I really love how the flash-o-red has really stretched me this month. Excellent challenge.
February 20th, 2013
@tara11 Thank you Tara! I'm glad you're enjoying the challenge. I always know when I've designed a good one because it stretches me too. I am definitely working at getting good subjects and shots for this week! I don't want them to look random or "oops! Forget to adjust the settings!" I want them to seem like they were meant to be that way. I am not happy with this shot. I just couldn't get the lighting the way I wanted and it seems too random. Oh well, I always set high standards for myself!!
February 20th, 2013
@olivetreeann I think that glass is particularly difficult because of it's nature - transparent! Maybe try underexposing with a back-light or something?
February 20th, 2013
Great shot. Can't wait to see the final result of February.
February 22nd, 2013
Interesting effect, it's rather pretty I think.
February 22nd, 2013
@edie Thanks Edie! It's not that far off- I can't believe this month has gone so quickly!
@automaticslim Thank you Andy! I am not crazy about this shot. I don't like the tilt or the lack of detail on the plate- but it's what it is and it's what I did on that day!
February 22nd, 2013
Love the high key and composition, very overexposed but you still can see some of the detail in the glass...beautiful =)
February 26th, 2013
@tanja_1211 Thanks Tanja- it was a start although I really don't like the shot all that much. However, it was nice to get such a positive response to it, so I'm glad folks liked it. Of the whole week I like the garden hose, the drain and the tulips (which made the PP!).
