We used to play a game when I was a child which involved a group us sitting in a circle, slapping our knees and then snapping our fingers, right hand, left hand while reciting a little poem. Each person had a number and the "ditty" went like this: Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar? Number 1 stole the cookies from the cookie jar. Who me? Yes you! Couldn't be! Said who? Number (insert someone else's number) stole the cookies from the cookie jar! Repeat until your parents say "That's enough! Find another game to play." My visitor's expression reminded me of that game today.
@salza Thank you Sally! You'll be seeing that heart for a while- this is next year's wood and it won't get split until next summer! @bkbinthecity Thank you Brian! As a child I couldn't understand why my parents got tired of that GREAT game! As an adult I now understand what an hour's worth of slapping thighs and clicking fingers made by a group of high-pitched giggling girls can do to one's sanity.
@kerristephens Thanks Kerri! @homeschoolmom Thanks Lisa! The log will be there for a long time- it's next year's wood. No acorns in the feeder- the deer think this is their personal stash of birdseed. Which is why I'm always bringing it in to remind them, it's not!!
@olivetreeann My husband's uncle has a deer feeder in his yard filled with corn and acorns, but it draws in black bears, so sometimes he has to take it down, too. You don't want black bears wandering into your front yard looking for food on a regular basis.
You certainly caught a bright captivating expression! He looks like a young deer just aiming to please and pose for you. Lovely photo of the whole scene including the log with the heart shaped carving.
@homeschoolmom Check out my picture on November 11th if you haven't seen it already!
@nicolecampbell LOL Nicole! Sorry about that! @mzzhope Thanks Hope! @twr Thanks Timothy! @taffy Thank you Taffy! I was going to take a whole shot of that log today but it was trumped by cashews- maybe tomorrow. Yes, it has a heart, but to me it's a D. You'll see! @cimes1 Thanks Carole! Stay tuned to see what that log really looks like! @digitalrn Thanks Rick! @sangwann Thank you Dione! I imagine every country has a child's game that drives parents crazy- this just happens to be one that's popular here- or at least it was when I was a kid! @henrir Thanks Henri!
Lovely shot of your pretty little visitor :) We used to play that game too, with a different rhyme (can't remember it now though). I love the heart log too :)
@mrssmith203 Thanks Carla! I was surprised he stayed as long as he did- usually they bolt the minute I step on the deck. But I was all the way down the stairs when I took this. @alia_801 Thanks Alia! I have to take a picture of the whole piece of wood. You could say there's a heart in the center but it's actually shaped more like a D. @archaeofrog Thanks Katie- yes, red-pawed or red-hooved for sure! @dakotaburns Thanks Donald! His sister visited later. I scared her off when I went out to get the feeder and bring it in for the night.
@pflaume I couldn't believe it either and the closer I got, the more I thought, "Ann are you stupid? What if he charges you?! Just because you went outside and took pictures of a bear, it does not mean you can tempt fate every time some interesting creature shows up in the back yard!" lol
He looks busted! I know that game well! My mom used to play it with her kindergartners and I played it at the day care with my 4 year olds when I worked there in college.
@espyetta Thanks Marybeth! Everybody sees the heart- but so far they've only seen part of it. I need to take a full shot so everyone can see that the outer shape is a D. Maybe tomorrow!
Cute rhyme. can just see the kiddies sitting in a circle playing this game. are you leaving food out for the dear? you're so lucky to have him come visiting.
@bruni Thanks Bruni! No, actually I take the feeder in at night so they can't eat it! But sometimes in the day, they try to sneak in the back yard and help themselves. I go out and scare them away.
sally's observation is quite the truth. i opened this photo and although i knew the deer was there with that expression, it's the log that really caught my eye first. wonderful!
