I've been enjoying the photography lessons put up by some of our expert photographers here, but up until now I've only had the chance to read the articles. Tonight I finally attempted to follow the instructions and take a shot! And here's the result.
I went to a class on organic gardening held by our township this evening. I've wanted to have a vegetable garden for years and I found out recently our township has a community garden complete with raised beds and fencing to keep out the deer. So I'm hoping to have some tasty garden treats this summer. Since I was out at night I was able to follow some of the tips given on night photography and take a shot of the town hall. I'll also be able to use this shot in an upcoming exhibit we're holding in conjunction with Middle Smithfield.
Shot hand held with an ISO of 3200, f4.3 (I think).
My father was an organic gardener back in the 70's and 80's. My nephew is trying to remember some of things he learned so he can use them in his small garden. Nice shot. I haven't done a night shot. Kind of chilly here.
Very well captured, Ann. I'm in love with night photography. I used to try ang grow a few veggies in my garden. Have given up because of the not so good results.
You are very steady-handed Ann! With handheld, it's always hard to avoid blowing out the lights as you need to have the lens open enough for the faster shutter speed. With a tripod, or a steady surface, you'd be able to stop it down to about 7.1 or more, and use a slower shutter speed. You'd still get enough light that way, but you wouldn't have that blown out spot at the front doorway. It's a great hand held night shot!
BTW, I'm going over to the thread to check, but if you didn't post there, you might consider doing so as we're learning from one another by looking at settings we've used.
Thank you everyone! I appreciate the comments and the compliments!
@taffy Thanks for the feedback Taffy. I shot this in AV mode so I don't know if that makes a difference. I am still rather fuzzy on how to get my camera to do certain things and as I was trying to do this quickly, I just set the dial at the lowest it would go, braced myself against the car and shot off a few pictures. I didn't even realize there was a man leaving the building until the last shot! This one was just before he came out. The lights were pretty bright there. I should really give myself more time and bracket several different settings to get the best one but I wanted to get home to shoot the moon too.
@daisymiller Thank you Daisy! @nicoleterheide Thank you Nicole! @grannysue Thank you Linda! @summerfield Thank you Vikki! I basically read Taffy's article and then took note of the details she posted about each shot. Then when I went to take the shot, I tried to copy the particulars of the shot that looked most like what I was about to take.
