It's a Dirty Job...

Filler alert! Time to catch up again. No need to comment on all...

From our visit to Aspen Ridge Farm- one of the trained watch dogs. They keep hawks and other preditors from snatching the chickens up for dinner. He may look bored right now, but the right silhouette in the sky or movement in the woods and he's on the job!
I love the concept of the dog and the composition of the chickens with him!

I think the dog is a Great Pyrenees which our yellow dog Jake was - well partly anyway and a few other breeds too. I love the way he is just laying there guarding his chickens. They are wonderful dogs - just too much hair!

Laughing -- which of these is not like the other?

They really do that? Our dog would be having too much fun chasing them all! Great shot

The look is rather caring, like a kindergarten teacher.

Great shot and interesting info

What a well trained dog!! The chickens seem to just treat him as part of the background.

@stownsend I think you're right Suzie- and he's only an outdoor dog so they don't have to worry about hair.

@golftragic I think he's a Great Pyrenees as Suzie suggested.

@lyndamcg There are two dogs in training which can't be left alone with the chickens just yet. For 90% of the time they guard but every now and then the "puppy" in them takes over and they go after the chickens! So until they won't do that anymore they can only be in with the chickens when the farmer is there.

@grammyn @kjarn @milaniet @stownsend @golftragic @jo38 @taffy @lyndamcg @dibzgreasley @haskar @thistle @robz @joansmor @henrir

Thank you Katy, Kathy, Milanie, Suzie, Marnie, Jo, Taffy, Lynda, Debs, Haskar, Joyce, Rob, Joan, and Henri!

cool - I love how he is lying low and in watch whilst the chickens seem oblivious.

@helenhall Thanks Helen-yes that just about explains the reality!

Those dogs are so patient. If I had a farm, I believe I'd have one or two.

I'm sure this is a Maremma dog which are natural guard dogs specially for birds! We have 2 trained ones here on our island where the little penguins live. So I agree with Marnie @golftragic :)

@gilbertwood Thanks Denise, I was pretty sure, but not certain. Never seen one in the flesh but seen plenty about the ones down your way.

Pretty dog...funny photo! The dog looks like he is thinking "how did I get stuck with this job? I hope no one sees me." :) Haha!
