Thank you everyone- I'm not sure what this plant is. It looks like a milkweed, but never develops the seed pods or the flowerheads that a milkweed has. As for the aphids, they seemed to be contained to this leaf, so I pulled it off and smashed them. Today there are one or two on another plant not very many so something seems to have discovered them and are helping me out by eating them.

The thing that worked best was just sliding our fingers along the leaves and stems. Our plant did survive and is thriving now that it has grown new leaves. It is a beautiful image. I love the vibrant green and the comp.
@shutterbug49 Thank you Debbie- I did smoosh them with my fingers (holding another leaf over them) and most seemed to be gone today. Might have to try the dish soap spray before we head to Ky.
