After Isaac and I were finished with our rock-tossing yesterday we headed back to the car. But before we left we discovered we were not alone! We actually saw two of these bugs resting on the same rock. They didn't look too friendly, so we left them alone. We also found a frog but he was so frightened by us he hid under a rock so that Grammy couldn't get a good picture. When we got home I looked up the bug in my bug book and for all of the fierceness of the way he looked it was somewhat disappointing to learn he was nothing but a "common" Stonefly (which causes me to wonder what the uncommon ones might look like!). The name was appropriate though, as we did find "him" on a stone! After reading about their habitat and lifecycles however, the nasty armor he touts was rectified by the fact that this guy is carnivorous! So let the other waterbugs beware!
@maggiemae Thanks Maggie! There is only one bug in this picture but there were actually two on the stone. heavens! this looks like one of darth vader's minions! seriously, he looks like he's wearing an armour or something! and if it's carnivorous, won't even go near it! awesome shot though, it made me look closely!
