We have been without power from 7 am till 3 pm today. The power outage affected just a small area of our suburb so only affected about 300 houses.
I still had a good day though. First, I did my grocery shopping at 8 am (our shopping centre has its own generators) and then went for coffee with a few friends at Shoal Bay from 10 am till 11.30 am (Shoal Bay wasn't affected by the outages) and then had lunch and a read of my latest book until the power came back on again.
Luckily, we have portable gas camping stoves to makes cups of tea etc and a generator to keep the fridge and essential things running at home, so no great difficulty to be without power.
I do feel for Diana though @ludwigsdiana having power outages every day. It must be horrendous.
I am starting to post photos taken at the zoo now while we were visiting our daughter. We spent Boxing Day at the zoo. It was a very hot day and most of the animals were sensibly staying in the shade, but I did manage to get some photos. I will post them over the next couple of weeks.
This gorgeous gorilla quite sensibly stayed in the shade, and he looked as though he was meditating.
Great image Babs - which zoo?
Sadly animals are often a lot safer in zoos than in the wild and most zoos nowadays are proactive in conservation, education and keeping species around for the future.
@maggiemae interesting you say that Maggiemae as smartphones generate a larger carbon footprint than any other consumer electronic device and the mining and land clearing to produce them is a huge threat to Eastern Lowland gorillas.
@ludwigsdiana Oh no, even though it wasn't any great hardship here because we are quite self sufficient it does make some things rather difficult, and we were limited as to what we can do with no power. It must be dreadful for you. Have you got a generator? We are thankful we got ours otherwise all the frozen stuff in the freezer would have gone. We bought our generator a few years ago after an East Coast Low (sub-tropical cyclone) put out or power for 4 days.
@boxplayer Don't know what caused the outage but at least they fixed it even though it took 8 hours.
.
@annied True the animals are better looked after than they would be in the wild, but this chap still looks sad.
We went to Werribee Zoo. We lived in Melbourne before we moved to New South Wales and Werribee Zoo hadn't been opened long when we moved there. I only ever went once when we lived in Victoria so while we were down that way at Christmas, we thought we would make another visit. It has come a long way since then.
@sangwann Ha ha, no power failure at the zoo it is over 1000 km from where I live.
@onewing I would like to visit Werribee Zoo. I always wonder when people say gorillas look sad what they think they would look like if someone took a photo of them sitting watching TV or staring at the ocean...I always think they're relaxed and just enjoying the quiet 😊
Good thing you had that camping gear! We have done the same in outtages here. I think he has the look of someone concentrating on playing with his phone on a game!
I like the thoughtful look that you've caught here. Sorry to hear about your power cut. We have been threatened with the possibility of cuts as a result of the Ukraine war. Fortunately warmer than usual weather has prevented cuts so far.
Welcome to our world Babs, atm we have daily outages of ten hours! Not sure how much longer our appliances are going to live.
