I think I've read somewhere, that in England 3 pubs close their doors for the last time every day, never to open as a pub again. This is due, in part, to the cheap alcohol available in the supermarkets and the smoking ban.
In the 12 years or so that I've worked in Wiltshire, the Cross Keys has been up for sale at least 10 times, either as Leasehold or Freehold. It reopens and then within months it closes again. It's location is poor, compared to other pubs in the town, it has never done food and its USP of "Live Music" now and then isn't enough.
A shame really, as it served some very lively real ales.
Lovely building .. sign of the times in NZ as well we have a disused pub just down the road drink driving laws put paid to that Rural pub.. sad but at least the roads are safer.
Very sad...all these little proper pubs with real ale getting less and less..and we getting lots weatherspoons and themed pubs..characterless and samey..
I've heard the same thing. A lot of our pubs and clubs have closed and our nightlife is nothing like it used to be ( not yet I do the pub scene anymore). It's such a shame when old pubs like this close their doors for the last time. They have such character. A lovely capture 👍
