Lincolnshire is often called RAF Lincolnshire; the County was awash with RAF Stations during the war, and there are perhaps still more RAF Stations in Lincolnshire than any other County in the UK.
The village where I live used to have an RAF Station, and is approximately 6 miles from RAF Scampton, the home of the RAF Aerobatics Team, the Red Arrows.
Whilst taking pictures of more garden visitors, I heard the roar of the Arrows. Packing both of my cameras away, I drove the 10 minutes or so and parked outside one of the crash gates and waited.
Today was cold, 4 degrees with a crystal blue winter sky with a pale crescent moon visible to the south from where I was stood with my camera set to sport mode. I took a lot of photographs (thank the Lord for digital), with many of them either empty blue sky, out of focus Hawk Jets, or just the tail of one or two as they disappeared out of the frame.
Every now and then, they sped across the sky to the south of me, in the general vicinity of the moon and I clicked and clicked and hoped for the best; to my absolute delight, this was one of the pictures I found after loading them all onto the PC.
well done , this is great. so difficult to catch these guys,, when we are in
Anglesey... we are not too far from RAF Valley... and they go over lots... never caught one as good as this
Good shot, difficult to catch them as they go so fast. We were at Flushing when they did a show at Fowey, had a great view sitting in a field overlooking Fowey
My partner's daughter and her family are based at Scampton. He is part of the ground crew with the reds. Their little boys love it when the planes come over but can become quite blasé!! They've been away but I guess they are already practising their summer routines. Great shot with the moon background.
@30pics4jackiesdiamond@cottiac@brennieb@lyndamcg@cmp@carole_sandford@johnsutton@marylandgirl58@dawnee@pasttheirprime@happysnaps@rosiekind@rjb71@scotthouston@photobird@Cherrill Thank you all so much for your views, Favs and incredibly positive comments on this photograph, which took it to the TP and PP.
It was exactly what I wanted on parking the car and spotting the Moon in the winter sky, I was so pleased that it appeared on my PC screen. I have deleted so many photographs of clear blue sky, as @photobird said, they move so fast, trying to keep up with them was nigh on impossible. @Cherrill - saw on BBC Look North that two new pilots were practicing - possibly whey there were only four of them up i the sky (three when I took this photo). Today, just two. They generally pop over to Cyprus for their Spring training. (My wife and I were quartered at Scampton when we returned from Cyprus ourselves in 1998, so we know the camp well (and the noise of the Arrows)
Thank you all once again - this is possibly my most favourite shot of the 138 I've taken so far with the 365Project.
But isn't it exciting when they fly overhead and you manage to get the shot you wanted! You've made me think I'll have to dig out those ones I took in 2015.
