Again, a relatively rare visitor to our garden, a common House Sparrow; in fact, two of them.
A member of the Passerine family, their numbers (like yesterday's Greenfinch) have taken a signifcant hit in recent years, the RSPB reports an almost 93% reduction between the 1970s and 2008. Numbers appear to be increasing of late, but from an incredbly low amount, it will take many many years for them to get back to the numbers there were when I was a kid.
This is a shot of two of around four or five that were at the feeders this morning.
We have a couple of dozen sparrows that live in the conifer in the front, but they are scared off the feeders by the starlings, pigeons, blackbirds, robin and occasional crow and magpie!! It is funny watching them queue to hop onto the feeder closest to the tree they live in though!
A lovely pair ! I lack in having the little sparrows in the garden at the moment , yet from my bedroom window I can see them flocking in my friend's garden a few doors away !! I think a new fence I had installed in the garden may be part of the problem ! or perhaps my neighbours seed is more to their taste !!
