This is Gold Hill, Shaftesbury, Dorset. It was used in the 70s and 80s here in the UK as the location for a set of Hovis Bread advertisements; set in the 1930s, a kid with a big old delivery bicycle pushing said bike up the hill with, what sounded to me, a Yorkshire accent narrating what it was like in the old days (what you could buy for a couple of English Shillings and still have change). I always thought it was set in Yorkshire. Well, the advert probably was, but the location was always here in Dorset.
I’ve spent much of the day at Blandford Garrison in Dorset and hoped that I would have the opportunity if I left early enough to call in at Shaftesbury to photograph Gold Hill. I set my camera up in the flat this morning with a lens that I wanted; got it all packed in my camera bag and set off to work. Arrived 20 minutes ago at Shaftesbury, went into the boot of my car to get my camera bag and it was not there; hence today’s photograph is shot on my iPhone
Thank you for your views, comments and favs on yesterday’s offering. Much appreciated.
I immediately thought of the Hovis advert -- I used it love it ! but like Babs thought it was filmed up north !! Great pov and shot - and a fav for the memory !
Lol, that's so familiar - I lived in North Dorset for years, went to sixth form in Blandford Forum, lived in one of nearby towns and worked in Shaftesbury for a while.
@mave it was a northern accent in the narration, I have no idea why they didn't use the local Dorset burr @beryl - this was local to me growing up, so I always knew it was filmed here. It's carnival country too or used to be, so I've known it for ever as the Shaftesbury carnival went along the top of this road
Just seen this in the Top Twenty, congratulations. I remember the advert well. It's quite enduring in musical terms as well; most people would now remember the slow movement of Dvorak's 9th Symphony as "the music from the Hovis ad".
I so love this image
