This house has a name like many (all) old houses has in this area of Holland . In those days they don`t use numbers , they have all kinds of names .
This house is still a chemist in the old fashion way.
The HEAD. This is an old sign for a chemist`s. We call them : ``Gaper (s) `` ( someone who`s yawn ) As nearly all old chemist are gone to day ( they become big drugstore`s ) also the Gapers are removed and that`s a pity because they where all different heads. The only similarity was they have his mouth open and the tongue out .
An interesting shop - nice that they've kept the old decoration and traditions. Houses in York, England, often have black cats on their roofs for luck.
Great collage. Loved your story. Pity these beautiful pieces of history are removed. Makes you mad seeing places by these being dumped and replaced by concrete blocks with no character at all.
I like the architecture. I wonder why this head with a gaping mouth yawning was used to signify a chemist. It also makes me think of a figurehead on a boat.
The Old had to make room for the New. what we used to call Apotheke is called here now a Drugstore. they still have a Pharmacist on staff though. Interesting that the old houses where call by names instead of street numbers.
