I intended to do some ``Dike`` pic`s next day`s but I`ve to start with this one as this is a remain of the old waterway to the sea. I`ve taken this pic. from the old dike.
The Schengen is a former waterway between the island Wolphaartsdijk and the rest of South Beveland in the province of Zeeland . It was once the connection between the Sloe and Veer Gat on the west side and the Oosterschelde on the east side.
The Schengen was a major access to the city Goes . By silting the channel was too shallow in the eighteenth century, and decided to land reclamation. In 1874 came the embankment of Schenge Polder completed.
The remains of the Schengen are still as creek remains recognizable in the landscape and are now the natural Schenge Orientals and Westerners Schenge . The name Schengen will now be back in the Schengen Polder (Wikipedia)
Quite a few countries joined the Schengen area I understand. does this waterways you talk about in your comment today have something to do with it or is the name Schengen a coincidence? Super picture and information.
@bruni Schenge
The Schengen is a former inlet that the former island of Wolphaarstdijk separated from the core of the South Beveland. The Schengen was formerly of great importance for shipping from Goes. In 1809 the eastern part of the Schengen reclaimed (Wilhelminapolder). In 1874, also reclaimed the westernmost part of the Schengen after years of siltation, (Schenge Polder). The remaining residual trenches called Orientals respectively Wester Schenge. These areas are managed by the Foundation "Zeeland Landscape" and have a rich flora and fauna
