A ditch is a watercourse at places where rain water flows along, so that it can be disposed jointly in order to prevent flooding. A ditch is part of the water management infrastructure. Through the ditches drained water is pumped elsewhere. It is important that the flow of the water is unobstructed. For this purpose they has to be cleaned up every year in autumn . This will be controlled by an official. We call this : ``sloot schouwen ``= watching the ditches.
Lovely shot. Great information. When I moved to my current city, I wondered about the "ditches" at the streeet intersections. I quickly learned that this area has clay subsoil. When it rains, the water runs off. The "street ditches" are there so the streets don't flood as badly as they would without them. I guess I should photograph these. I never have.
What a great shot. I love all the colors and fascinated by this system. We should learn to conserve water here when it rains instead of it being wasted.
Great picture and description of the function of the ditches. Cleaning ditches to keep them free flowing is a lesson some areas of this country could do with learning. Katharine
