We are well know for our dikes but the greatest protection against the sea comes from the (sand) dunes that`s on nearly our whole coast line . We keep them in good condition by planting `` Helm gras``= Ammophila arenaria on it as soon as it possible. The sand dunes , often very old, are natural made by the wind but we give it ,when needed, a little help.
They are beautiful! I love the dunes along the shore line whenever I go to the ocean. In New Jersey (the state I used to live in and grew up in) they built jetties out into the ocean thinking it would protect the shoreline, only to find out it destroyed it faster! Now, after many years of restoration, the dunes are finally looking better and doing the same as yours. I love the collage you've put together here!
Yes sand dunes are a terrific natural barrier. ours tend to shift so much with strong winds - how do yours cope with wind, or do you not have strong winds like us?
Love your stories about your country, Pyrrhula. You are so good at narrating all the information. I assume the grass is planted to keep the sand from being blown away or carried away by the sea.
Lovely photos - I usually think of dykes and water, but I've never associated your country with dunes before. It makes sense they'd be there! The grasses do a great job in preserving them too.
Ferry, I'm embarrassed to say (so often) how little I realize I understood about Holland until you shared your interesting photos and excellent commentary. I always envisioned a cement wall of dikes around Holland...my idea is obviously based more on children's book illustrations than a solid grounding in geography!
...I got sidetracked and should have added that this is a lovely collage, and the grassy dunes will replace my mental image that was all wrong in the first place!
@olivetreeann Thanks for you nice lines and explanation. We also have learned by time @gilbertwood Yes we have . For that we planted it with the grass, The grass it self and the roots of them hold the sand from blowing away. and even than sometimes we`ve to supply new sand witch we dredge out of the sea. @sangwann Yes @Weezilou Thank you for you nice lines. I`ve been a teacher for a while @bruni@lealady@kelly2 + 3 Thank you for you fav`s Much appreciated
