In the front of the road you can see the entrances to the fields . A dam into the ditches .
A brief history of this village Ouwerkerk .
Ouwerkerk is the oldest village on the former island of Duiveland, perhaps founded in the eleventh century. The village got its name after also in Nieuwerkerk a church was built. the name for this new church was built is unknown.
The medieval tower of the church, originally dedicated to Geertruid, was blown up in 1945 by German troops, including the church itself was badly damaged. Also, many buildings, including a wooden octagonal mill were lost. After the Second World War, the remains of the church and tower were demolished. In 1956 a new church was built, in 1957 the freestanding tower was completed..
During the Flood of 1953 Ouwerkerk was badly affected: one in six people died. In the village is a museum to tell and remember this big disaster.
Such a lovely scene, Ferry, belies the tragedy this town has suffered! Thank you for sharing the history. It always makes a photograph come to life to know something more about it!
Gorgeous view. Love how the road leads the eye to the church steeple. Great story to go with this shot and place. There are a little less than half a million people living in Malta but the Maltese Islands are so small that they barely show on a map of Europe.
