Grevelingen or Grevelingenmeer (Lake Grevelingen) is a former Rhine-Meuse estuary on the border of the Dutch provinces of South Holland and Zeeland that has become a lake due to the Delta Works.
It is situated between the former islands of Goeree-Overflakkee (South Holland) and Schouwen-Duiveland (Zeeland) which are connected by the Brouwersdam on the west and the Grevelingendam on the east.n (The bridge on the left to be seen on this pic.)
The Grevelingen lake is the biggest salt water lake in Europe . Mainly used for water sports and nature area`s The inlet for fresh salt water is a lock/sluice in the Brouwersdam.
Beautiful expanse - it seems more like part of the sea than a lake to me. It's the catholic lands that organise carnival mostly and this is because on Ash Wednesday, immediately after carnival Catholics were expected to fast Wednesday's and Friday's up to Easter. Very different today.
