Safflower, Carthamus tinctorius

Get Pushed Challenge 466
My get pushed partner challenged me to photograph something unusual about summer, an unusual perspective or just something odd. I've really not been many places and haven't seen much unusual, except when I couldn't take a photo or at least a decent photo. Yesterday I was watching a butterfly flutter about one of my Meal on Wheels client's shrubs. It even landed on my hand and my shoulder. I couldn't identify until I got back home and got onto Google. Of course the phone was in the pocket on the side where it landed on me. When I did get it out to take a photo, it fluttered off. At one of the other stops I made yesterday, there were four blue jays laying about in the mulch beside the building. One had spread its wings out. Of course a phone camera doesn't zoom in well and the photos were crap.

Then I thought about this plant. It may not seem so unusual, but I had never seen it growing before - all the years that I used safflower in my bird feeders. There was a scary post going around on Facebook earlier in the summer about a weed that was showing up that was toxic - on the skin, ingested by any animal/human. This plant looked a lot like the photo that was circulating and on Google but I was still trying to figure out how exactly I was going to remove it from the garden. Then it bloomed and when I identified, it wasn't the noxious weed at all. Safflower. Right below the feeder. Imagine that. Interesting looking leaves. I haven't got around to touching them yet to see if they are as sharp as they look.

Sorry for the book. I must be a bit chatty tonight.
@homeschoolmom I hope this will suffice to meet the challenge. If I see anything else that fits the bill in the next few days, I will post it. I wouldn't have thought this challenge would be so difficult. Thanks for making me think.

Very cool. Great story, too. I had a similar experience with some cardinals yesterday. They were right in front of my until I pulled out my cell phone, then they flew away.

I like your book- and your flower! You can use this in cooking and salads (obviously not the leaves, but the flower!). More research for you!

@thewatersphotos Thanks Gary. I'm glad you enjoyed the story. I should probably add some days to deliver but things are getting busy. I need some morning time to do stuff around the house.
@pyrrhula Thank you Ferry.
@olivetreeann Probably won't harvest the flowers, as there are not really enough of them to do much good. I don't plan on planting them. This was a volunteer. Glad you liked the "book." I was on a tear wasn't I.
