Not sure whats going on with the butterfly's, but they are really liking the beach area of the river. May be just a way of getting a drink, as this one has that proboscis fully extended down to the mud.
I've noticed they like to play in the mud - and have had the same thought as you - there's a lot prettier places :) They don't listen. Nicely focused on this pretty swallowtail.
