They are just being very 'middle english' about the name. I happen to like the quaintness and the fact that there is a barrier to keep cars out.

I thought that a strait is a naturally formed, narrow, typically navigable waterway that connects two larger bodies of water. But @joysabin says it is middle english! It is rather narrow and quite delightful!
