Girraween National Park is at Stanthorpe in Queensland - it preserves the typical granite outcrop environment. This amazing Banksia species was flowering along the walkway. We were also lucky enough to catch a very prolonged performance by one or more Lyre birds. These birds are natural mimics - they flawlessly performed the calls of Kurrawongs, Kookaburras, Black Cockatoos, Whip Birds, Thrushes, Honeyeaters and assorted other unknown forest birds. It was absolutely incredible.
@joannakate Hi again Joannna. The only time we've ever heard them before was in Dorrigo NSW. It had lots of rainforest and timber production. Would you believe the Lyre birds there had learnt to mimic a chainsaw!!??
They also did a little bit of the other birds - but nothing like yesterday. Yesterday really was marvellous. That banksia was something else too - we've never seen them with the black edging like that. Apparently these banksias and the Lyre birds are regular attractions along the Dr Roberts walk at Girraween - mainly at this time of year. If you get up this way it is worth a walk. Thank you for having a look. Cheers Rob
Having seen several very interesting videos about the Lyre bird I can appreciate even more the delight it must've been to witness them on your walk. And what an interesting bloom too!
@tibles Thanks Ulrika - I wanted the expanse of rock to be able to superimpose the banksia. I've been trying to record the native plants with thire local habitat - and it's a good way to get both together. Cheers Rob
@lyndemc Hi Denise - it was a very special walk - We did not get much of a look at them - but we have seen them before. They are interesting but their calls are just fantastic. They are so loud - they just dominate the forest - and echo around - it is very hard to identify exactly where they are. This is only the second time we have heard them - totally hooked!! Going back next week.
@caterina Hi Caterina - what you have said is so true - the images that appear from around the world are amazing. I'm like you in that I find that aspect one of the most interesting.
@partyof72015 Hi Brandi - thank you for your comment and especially for your follow. As you say, we are so lucky to have the National Parks so close to our home - they are truly beautiful. Cheers Rob
