How to raise a bridge - old style. by robz

How to raise a bridge - old style.

At Hobart harbour - very small canals entering small convict built harbours off the Derwent River. Sailing boats had to enter and leave - so as the city developed lifting bridges were built and steam engines were used to raise them. The bridges still work - using a modified rack and pinion effect to rock them out of the way - but the steam engine is now just a wonderful sculpture.
interesting angle

@peadar Hi Peter - it was an excellent machine - and we actually saw the bridge open using the new version. Quite fascinating. Cheers Rob

Nice Dutchman's Tilt! It really emphasizes the height of the machine. Good shot!

@olivetreeann Thank you Ann for your kind comment - unfortunately i have to admit that this was the only way to fit it in without a whole lot of buildings appearing.! :)
