The original choice of subject seems to make a huge difference to how pleasing the self edited camera "effects" button results are. Subjects with more graphic lines and shapes seem to result in a greater number of acceptable outcomes. I liked this group much more than those seen in #1.
We often seem to learn something each time we decide to explore the hidden capabilities of our cameras. That is how I discovered a few months ago, to my great surprize, that I had a handy embedded SC capability. I hope you will discover one or two effects that you will like to use in some particular circumstances. As you say, it seems to depend a lot on the subject. From my experience, the advantage of having the effects built in the camera is that you can test them on the spot, before the shot or just after the shot when your subject may still be available for another take.
