@30pics4jackiesdiamond@robz@wakelys@koalagardens@olivetreeann@onewing Ok, I like the answers above better than this because they are so fun, but here is what I found from Audubon. By standing on one leg, a bird reduces by half the amount of heat lost through unfeathered limbs. Here’s another question: Where does the hidden limb actually go?
@shutterbug49@30pics4jackiesdiamond@robz@wakelys@koalagardens@olivetreeann@onewing correct - birds maintain body temperature by trapping air between feather layers. they lose most of their body temperature through their skinny unfeathered legs. So to answer the second question they curl one leg up tucking it into the feathers to warm the leg up and so stop the blood moving through the leg from cooling.
I got so side-tracked today as I have a mum and joey, so I forgot to check back to answer. fun conversation @caterina@ludwigsdiana
I never thought I'd be very grateful to a bin-chicken! But this has been such fun to hear from you all and read your great comments and replies. Thanks Jackie for your funny question - and then thanks to you all for so many answers - with the actual final info being so interesting too!.
You are all wonderful people to know and talk to - you make my day.
Cheers and thanks for being there! Rob @30pics4jackiesdiamond@wakelys@shutterbug49@koalagardens@olivetreeann@onewing@caterina@ludwigsdiana
@koalagardens@robz Well, now I have something to ask my inquisitive grandchildren and then supply the answer after they guess so that I sound really smart!
