The ponies in the field were getting a bit worried as there is a new one there and some of the birders were climbing over the ditch to get right up to the fence. It upset the new pony who then started jumping around a bit so Mr Hoopoe flew up onto the fence. Sometimes people can be so inconsiderate as they really shouldn't keep trying to invade the privacy of the farmer and his animals. They had long lenses anyway so I don't know why they were trying to get so close.
WOW...no wonder you had so many birders there....that is a RARE bird sighting in England as they are just transients and, from what I was just reading, usually just seen in the spring along the southern coast when they overshoot on their journey from Africa to Europe!

And you are right...birders can be somewhat fanatical in trying to get a once in a lifetime bird.
