The first of this 9-day section followed the Pelorus River to the Emerald Pool and popular picnic spot. It then climbed and sidled small spurs undulating along the river to Captain Creek Hut a lunch spot. The afternoon was spent walking more sidings and crossing the river just past the confluence with Fish Tail Stream using this bridge to arrive at Middy Hut.
