Malta today celebrates Independence. At mid-night of 20th September, 1964, the last British flag was lowered down and the Maltese flag proudly took its place all over the Islands. That was the beginning of a bright future. In 48 years Malta has been overhauled from a nation depending completely on servicing the British services to a modern country with it’s individual customs and culture. From that day onwards, Malta never looked back, industry was started from scratch, hotels built all over the Island and from a fortress in the middle of the Mediterranean, it has been turned into one of the most stable economies in Europe with one of the lowest rates of unemployment (not counting those who do not want to work at all, I would say with full employment).
I took this shot yesterday before sunset – it shows the monument erected in Floriana to commemorate the occasion. The statue of the lady symbolises Malta shedding its shackles from colonial rule. We (my camera and I) would have gone to follow the official celebrations taking place in Valletta, but Christine preferred to go swimming and so we did and I enjoyed it. The sea temperature is still around 25/26 C.
Thank you all so much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday’s picture.
thanks for the story too
