We visited Valletta, on 13th December mostly just to watch people flitting from one shop to another. When we got fed up going round the place we went for a pizza at a restaurant in St James Cavalier – one of the fortifications of the city – and by the time we came out the shops – apart from the eating places - had closed, the shoppers had returned home but the lights were still on. In all my shots the camera is hand held and they may not be too sharp. This is La Vallette Square – you can see the statue of the Grand Master (in silhouette) in the middle of the square with the Christmas tree close to it. Jean-Pierre is there, too, with his camera trying to take a close-up shot of the statue.
On the left is what is left of the Royal Opera House. This magnificent building was bombed during WWII and subsequent governments could not take a decision on what to do with it. A few years ago it was made part of a project which included a new main entrance to Valletta, a new parliament building and the restoration of the site. The project led by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano was to restore what was left of the theatre and retain it as a memorial to what Malta had to go through during the great war. At the same time the inside has been converted into an open air theatre.
Thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday’s picture.
