The feast of the Ascension of Mary (to heaven) is a very important day in the Maltese calendar. It is celebrated on 15th August and is also a public holiday. On that day in WWII in 1943 Malta was saved from capitulation to Nazi forces with the arrival of the convoy, codenamed Operation Pedestal, which brought safely needed supplies as Malta was on the verge of starvation and the guns no longer had ammunition to defend the Island from the massive air attacks from enemy bombers.
A number of parishes around Malta and Gozo are dedicated to this feast and fireworks are let all around the Island. Even the Luqa International Airport stops operating for some time for safety reasons.
We were invited to my daughter’s house for a bbq and also to watch the Santa Maria of Mosta fireworks from her roof. In my picture you can see tv aerials, solar water heaters and water tanks on the roofs of residents in the area which I couldn’t cut out. You can also see the dome of the Mosta Rotunda which has one of the biggest unsupported domes in the world.
Thank you so much for looking and for the comments and fav on yesterday’s picture.
