Republic Street, the main street in Valletta, nicely lit and overcrowded with shoppers.
Republic Street has been the main thoroughfare in Valletta since the city was founded in the 16th century. It has seen the highest dignitaries of the world passing along it in expensive cars, or led by ceremonial military detachments or even on foot to meet the people. In colonial times it was called Kingsway and before that, in the times of the Order of St John, it was Strada Reale (Royal Street – like the Royal Mile in Edinburgh). Many Maltese still speak of it as Strada Rjali.
