Again on my walk along Wied id-Dis Sunday before yesterday.
I saw this strange structure some 100 metres away from the little farm shed I showed yesterday. I have to say I have never seen anything like this. But considering all possibilities I have now come to the conclusion that it must be a place where somebody keeps and breeds racing pigeons. The funny thing was that I did not see one pigeon around. The owner must be an enthusiast on the subject and as people like him are not allowed to keep pigeons in villages and towns he must have transformed this land into an area where he can keep and breed hundreds of them without having trouble with the authorities or neighbours. Racing pigeons from short and long distances away is quite popular in Malta.
About yesterday’s shot I have to explain that farming in Malta is much different than in the big countries. Many farmers are part-timers and much of the land is divided into small fields which can be cared for by one or two persons using small mechanical tools and hand tools. They keep tool sheds in the fields and live in the village or town core. The bigger farms are away from the area where I live but the farmers live in town cores as distances are very short.
Thank you so much for your views, comments and fav's.
Goodness me, that is quite a ramschackle if ever I have seen one. Hope it does not collapse in the next storm. What a great find and shot, love the flag on top.
A photographer's delight ! but this construction has seen better days (or perhaps not !!) Before I read your script I was trying to fathom the use of such a construction and your explanation seems to fit the bill ! I wonder what the the blue and white chequered flag represents !!
I thought that maybe they started with a simple extension to the shed but didn’t know when to stop. It doesn’t look very safe but makes for a great photo.
Great find! At first I was afraid people lived there and wondered how it did not fall down. Relieved to read that it's for pigeons. It looks like the structure grew along with the pigeon collection.
Good to read about farming in Malta. Very different from here in the UK but if it works for them that’s good. Small is sometimes better than the other extreme! Interesting picture & comment.
I'm pretty sure this structure wouldn't go down well here, someone would certainly complain about it lowering the tone of the area. Good shot of it though.
