From Kalkara I drove to Senglea to try to take a picture of Fort Ricasoli but my calculations where incorrect and the fort was hidden by Birgu. Instead I took a shot of this guard tower on L-Isla Bastions. This must be the most beautiful of all those that one can find around the Islands If you look closely you will see an eye and an ear carved above the lookout windows and that is why I chose the title. You can also see me looking out of the window - that is something I added from another selfie I took some weeks earlier. The guard tower was restored some years ago and is now in perfect condition.
The tower is situated at the tip of the Gardjola Gardens which were planned by Grandmaster De La Sengle in 1551. The guard tower, ‘Il-gardjola’, has various symbols sculpted on in such as an eye, an ear and the crane bird, representing guardianship and observance protecting the Maltese shores.
