From Boats to Bikes

My cycle route to work takes me along the Great Central Railway, now part of “National Cycle Route 6”, a fully surfaced cycleway popular with runners, dog walkers, and horse riders as well as cyclists. This photo was taken where the railway crosses the Grand Union Canal. All the routes, including the cycle route, link London with the north of England. This part of the Canal was opened in 1814, and nowadays, at least in the summer, is busy with leisure boats. The railway was opened in 1898, and closed in 1968. I think that the disused railway was surfaced and opened as a cycle route around 1990. It was certainly well established when I started using it in the mid-1990s. And to add to the historical transport context, that is a packhorse bridge in the background - probably 18th century.
