A fill in from last week. Having a quarry almost on the doorstep is a mixed blessing, but on balance is definitely advantageous. On the one hand the house is shaken daily by the lunchtime blast, and the house required more regular dusting (or so my wife tells me). On the other hand public accessible quarry land means that we can walk to each of the two local villages (and pubs!) from our home, or around the edge of the quarry and back through the valley, all through unfarmed but managed countryside, with stony paths, wildlife ponds, and areas of woodland. Croft Hill rises to the west of the quarry, between our Lane and the excavation, protecting us from any noise. A 400 foot cliff on the far side descends into to quarry itself. This shot was from the ridge that hugs the southerly edge of the “hole”.
@tishpics Granite is quarried, mostly for roadstone - it is crushed and coated with tar before being used for road surfacing. The granite descends beneath Leicester to emerge about 10 miles away to the north where the same company has another quarry. Leicester is in a volcanic crater!
