This woodpecker's nest is well know to all the locals who walk along the countryside path between the villages of Huncote and Croft. The chicks are noisy, making no attempt to keep their whereabouts secret from folk passing below. If anyone is standing directly below the hole Mum and Dad wait in an adjacent tree, but by merely taking just a few steps further along the path and waiting for a minute or so, passers-by can see one of the aduts swoop in to land on the trunk close to the hole and lean in to feed the chicks, before taking off in search of the next meal. @shepherdmanswife is convinced that our bird feeding station is supplying the chicks, since we regularly see a woodpecker feeding, but since it is around 500m away, as the Woodpecker flies, I'm sure that there are closer supplies of more suitable juicy larva.
Great find and shot. I was quite surprised whilst watching Springwatch tonight that a woodpecker was taking the young of a tree creeper for food for its own!
